The Power of Culture confronting the Culture of Power
In 2011, Reem Abu Jaber established Al Hekayat Kindergarten as a community contribution for Deir Al Balah, and she donated it entirely to the NAWA association in 2015.
In 2016, NAWA built a two-floor cultural center where its design reflects some elements of old Palestinian houses to connect the children with their roots and heritage. The first floor includes Al Hekayat Kindergarten along with an inclusive, educational and environmentally friendly garden.
The Kindergarten aims to provide early childhood services to empower Deir Al Balah community culturally, artistically and psychosocially, and promote the use of non-formal education. This includes providing joint activities for parents and children, to strengthen their abilities.
Al Hekayat Kindergarten offers its education services to approximately 100 children in KG1 and KG2 and encourages the enrollment of children with disabilities.
The Kindergarten consists of an early childhood coordinator, a principal, a care officer, five early childhood specialists and five educational assistants to ensure the quality of education and provide the necessary care for children and develop their skills. All female educators have educational and academic degrees.
The Kindergarten approach relies on integrating methods of the Waldorf Steiner and Montessori education with Palestinian culture and identity. It also promotes the return to nature and guides children spiritually and kinesthetically through a group of interactive activities.

The Kindergarten holds monthly meetings with parents at the Parents Club and individual sessions with each child that needs to adjust their behavior or solve a specific issue. Sometimes, the parents get involved in these sessions
As part of its role to empower Deir Al Balah society culturally, artistically, educationally and psychosocially
NAWA inaugurated the Kindergarten building funded by ANERA, constructed in the memory of m/s Mustafa Dawood Seyam, Moneer Dawood Seyam and Ahmed Aldaya. Currently, Al Hekayat Kindergarten is on the first floor of the NAWA Association building, which is funded by the Arab Fund
The Kindergarten includes five classrooms; two for KG1, two for KG2 and one nursery. Each classroom accommodates 24 children, contains four hexagonal wooden tables and 24 chairs, and are each divided into four corners: arts and nature, concentration, reading and story and installation
It has many educational and eco-friendly corners like puppetry, freehand drawing, wooden kitchen, sand, birds and suitable outdoor games for children with motor disabilities granted by Palestine Playgrounds Institution – UK. The garden also includes toilets and drinking water.
